About Jana
My decision to become a yoga teacher came as a revelation on October 25, 2001 after many years of practice and self-directed studies in yoga and Eastern philosophies. On that day and in that moment, I realized my true calling or dharma was the path of yoga. I began Power of One Yoga Ministry with an idea and six yoga mats! Armed with a SportYoga certification from NESTA, in short time, I was teaching yoga in homes, schools and churches around the Baltimore-Washington, DC area. After an enlightening journey to Ghana in 2003 with the International Association of Black Yoga Teachers, I returned home ready to pursue yoga studies and the 200-hour teacher certification. I enrolled in the yama school of yoga, ayurveda and meditative arts in Baltimore. I completed yoga teacher training in Integrative Yoga Therapy in 2005 and restructured Power of One Yoga Ministry into an LLC in order to expand my reach into diverse communities. Along the way, I also completed Level One certification in the Wise Earth Ayurveda Nutrition, Food,
Breath and Sound Sadhana Program and became certified in Yoga Therapeutics for Seniors by the Department of Integrative Medicine at Duke University. In 2010 I traveled to India for advanced yoga studies and to experience ashram life at Sivananda Math in Rikhiapeeth and the Bihar School of Yoga. Under the guidance of Swami Muhktidharma of New Zealand, I studied chakra sadhana, prana vidya and ajapa meditation practices. I was given the spiritual name Gyanamati (wise mother) by Swami Niranjanananda, the founder and spiritual leader of Bihar Bharati, the first university of yoga and the successor of Paramahamsa Satyananda. I will complete the 500-hour yoga teacher training program at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in 2012. I am an ardent student of astrology with more than 40 years experience as an intuitive interpreter of natal charts. Professional memberships
include the International Association of Yoga Therapists, Kripalu Yoga Teachers
Association and the Yoga Alliance.
I'm an urban-based yogini of African descent living and
teaching the ancient healing systems of Yoga and Ayurveda. I strive
to live an authentic life based on my true nature. I seek opportunities
to express the Divine talents and qualities bestowed upon me. I accept
the things I don't understand because I have faith that everything
is in Divine Order. Life is an elixir and I am enjoying it one sip
at a time.
*In the Akan culture of West Africa, Sankofa literally means there
is nothing wrong with learning from hindsight. Sankofa is
symbolized by a mythical bird, which flies forward with its head
turned backwards. This reflects the belief that the wisdom of the
past serves as guidance for building the future. |
